Fix the Big 12 by Kicking Out the Longhorns

The Big 12 needs help. With Nebraska and Colorado having already left the conference as well as Texas A&M on their way to the SEC even more bad news comes in the form of Oklahoma exploring leaving next. So what can be done to save the Big 12?

How about getting rid of the Longhorns? Let me explain.

There is already talk that the Pac-12 could be the next Super Conference and be the Pac-16. Why stop at 16? What the Big 12 needs to do is expand to 24 teams to fix the sports side and distribute the money more evenly between the 24 teams to fix the business side. Here is how.

1. Expand, to 24 teams and expand quick. The Big 12 needs 24 teams with two leagues that would be similar to Football in England. The Big 12 are the best 12 teams in every revenue generating sport (Football & Basketball) with the "Little 12" for lack of a better term, being the teams that can get promoted up to the Big 12. The top 4 teams in the "Little 12" each season get promoted to the "Big 12" while the bottom 4 teams of the "Big 12" get relegated to the "Little 12". This way the best teams are always playing in the Big 12. Which makes the conference more attractive for TV deals.

2. What teams should join? There are almost unlimited scenarios. Here are a few

A: If the MountainWest did not have their own TV network that was part owned by NBC Universal and CBS a merger would be ideal. The MountainWest will have 10 team next year with the nine Big 12 teams (minus Texas A&M) and you only need 5 more which should be Houston, BYU, SMU, maybe steal Arkansas from the SEC and get TCU as well.

B: Realistically, if the MountainWest is not an option you need to get teams that will agree to a smaller piece of the pie to start with the opportunity to get more money as their program gets better and is in the top 12 teams of the Big 12. The Big 12 takes the whole West division of Conference USA (Tulsa, Houston, SMU, Rice, Tulane & UTEP) Maybe some teams from the WAC and Sunbelt.

C: Dominate the Central time zone. This limits expansion to AR, LA, IL, the Dakotas as a packaged deal (ND & SD), MS, AL, IL, WI, NE, MN. Possible options to add in order of prestige would be:
Any team of the six teams in the West Division of the SEC
Any team in the Conference USA West Division
TCU
Southern Miss
UAB
There are eight teams from the Gateway football conference in the Central time zone
Troy
Arkansas St
LA - Monroe
LA - Lafayette
North Texas

3. Think the impossible. Should the Big 12 give Texas the boot? Texas is getting too powerful on their own and is causing other teams to leave. It may be in the best interest of the conference to cut ties with the Longhorns. It sounds crazy......OK maybe it is crazy now that I have said it out loud. If Texas stays, they need to redo the ESPN Longhorn network deal to make it work for the Big 12 and not just the Longhorns.

4. Distribute the money. While Universities are non profits the decisions behind the conference moves are based on money. By distributing the profits more fair to all 24 teams in the Big 12 and the Little 12 it helps more schools become more competitive which helps the entire league and not just one or two schools. With the TV deal of the Big 12 coming up in 2016 now is the time for the Big 12 to take action.

Bye Bye Longhorns?

Five Tool Players

In baseball the scouts and coaches look for five tool players. A five tool player in baseball can hit for average, hit for power, has speed, throwing ability and fielding ability.

What are the five tools in business?
Education?
Sales?
People skills?
Communication?
Decision making skills?
Ability to meet deadlines or quotas?
Work ethic?
Experience?
Product knowledge?

I am not sure if anyone has published an authoritative list of the five tools all businessman and businesswomen need to succeed in business but for for the sake of this post lets say that there is a definitive list of five tools in business. Obviously, you would like to hire the five tool business person. But as in sports there is only a limited number of five tool athletes. So after they are gone you have to go after the four tool players and so on until you are after the one or two tool athletes.

In sports and more specifically in basketball each player has a role. You have rebounders, scorers, three point specialists, defensive specialists, energy guys, glue guys, and more. On the most efficient teams the players on the team understand their given roles. The defensive specialist understands when he needs to go in, he needs to shut down the opponents best player. If he then decides to shoot every time he gets the ball he will soon find himself on the bench. He is not playing to his strengths or his role on the team.

What about business management? How many of the managers in your company have all five tools? How many of them only have a few of the tools? Now there are a few options you have if you have a manager with less than five tools. You can replace them with a five tool manager, or you can play to their strengths and define their role for them. What if you have a manager that is not a people person but the were promoted because they are good at what they do? You do not want to lose out on his or her abilities but a manger needs to be able to deal with people effectively. What ways are there around this problem without replacing this manager? What if a co-manager was hired or another person with a different skill set was promoted to assist with the people side of the job? Another option you have is do nothing and settle for mediocrity. Without risk there is no reward!

In my past experience I was managing 80 people all by myself. I needed help desperately. Another Supervisor was assigned to take half of my employees. There was a learning curve and and this new Supervisor and I decided that she would take care of the human resource issues, payroll, documentation and things like that while I dealt with the product knowledge, the agents, the Supervisor calls, coaching and what not. This seemed to be a great fit for not only the company but for myself and the other Supervisor. We were enjoying our roles. However, when we asked for this to be our roles moving forward on a permanent basis we were denied as we needed to be more well rounded. I understand the answer we got and might have even given the same answer if this question were brought to me. However, what if you have two managers who are doing their strengths? How much more efficient would your business be if you had a manager of people, a manager of products, a manager of human resources, and a manager processes? So unless you have a five tool manager who can excel in all of these areas what options do you have?

You do not ask your shot block shot specialist on your basketball team to start getting four assists a game. You do not ask your point guard to lead your team in rebounding. While you may ask these players to get better in other areas you still need them to get even better at their given role so they and the team will get even better. Managers can be asked to do other things and work on being more well rounded. However, why don't we ask them to keep doing what they do well and get another manager to help with a role that they themselves excel at to help the team and company win?

Introduction

While there has been much work that has been done about the business of sports, I would like to look at a different angle and compare the efficiency of sports to the business world. I would like to start by introducing this blog as well as myself. My name is Jake. I am an avid sports fan and I would consider myself a businessman and not a writer or a blogger. I have played sports in high school and college as well as worked in sports previously. The questions that I will be continually asking in this blog is why can't business be more like sports or why is business so much like sports? There are some bright individuals in both sports and business who try to change the game or challenge the status qua. However, there are many individuals, teams and companies that do not risk challenging the status qua. Why are there not more game changers and business changers?

Much of my previous business experience has been in call center management of both sales and customer service agents. To those unfamiliar with call centers, a call center you may be familiar with would be that of your credit card company. Usually you call when something is wrong and the agent hopefully has the presence of mind and the authority to fix the problem the first time you call, in a reasonable period of time. If the agent did their job correctly they would have not only given you world class customer service but they would have amazed you so much by fixing your problem so efficiently that when they suggested that you buy something else or sign up for some promotion they were doing, you gladly accepted the offer. I am thankful to have a call center background because I feel that has given me so much experience in several different business functions in such a quick period of time. As a manager of a call center I have had to recruit, hire, train, coach, teach, and give guidance to employees. I have had to market the call center to other departments and companies, provide payroll functions, accounting functions, quality service and the list goes on and on. I will try not to bore the few readers I might get in the future.

So in a nutshell I will claim for the sake of this blog that I have experience in sales, customer service, management, human resources, recruiting, marketing, counseling, teaching, training, operations, and budgeting.

Based on my experience in the business world and my knowledge of sports is what this blog is based on.
